                            Juicing

Articles on this site reflect the experiences of my wife, Angie.  The info below is the result of my interviewing her, and then posting the interview with the corresponding resources and links on this site.  We hope this helps you conduct your own research on your unique path to wellness.  Please enjoy!  Daniel.

Daniel: "When did you start juicing?"

Angie: "Juicing is something I started perhaps 12 years ago.  This is a wonderful, highly beneficial process.  However, because of misinformation (see tips below), I quit after a year or two.  I am now juicing again, and in a way that makes it easier and more effective.

Daniel:  "How does it impact you?"

Angie:  "I actually often feel a "rush" when I drink my juice.  When I started juicing again, I had been feeling weak, and hadn't been juicing for a while.  After prayer one day, I felt compelled to pull out my Champion juicer and start again.  That first drink made a noticeable difference to my strength, and I still feel the difference with each drink.

Many people with chronic illness have digestive difficulties.  Leaky gut and malabsorbtion are common problems.  When you juice veggies, they are easily assimilated in the body with much less effort for your digestive system.  You get quick energy and nutrition.  It's my understanding that although fiber is essential, it also inhibits the absorption of the veggies. "

Here's what's said by juicing advocates about it:

* High in vitamins, minerals and live enzymes.
* Powerful blood cleanser.
* Helps to fight disease.
* Energizing.
* Easily absorbed.
* Detoxifies the body.
* Concentrated phyto-chemicals and antioxidants.
* Reduces acidity in the body, helps with alkalinity.

Tips

Here are some of Angie's tips for you to consider.

* I've had my Champion juicer for over 10 years and it's still running great!  There are various methods of creating the juice.  The Champion juicer is a favorite of many in the alternative community.  Most products you find in the store kitchen appliance section use a method of juice extraction that is far less effective, creating a juice that will have less of what you need in it.  The Champion uses the process that will create a good quality juice for a reasonable price.  There is a class of juicers above the champion, using a more effective technique.  However, these sell for thousands of dollars, which the champion is around $230.  (Use the yellow link on the right to see a website with Champion juicers or click here.)

* With their high intake of vitamins, minerals and enzymes, they provide an instant supply of nutrients.  This is an essential component within any strategy to build a healthy and strong immune system.

* When dealing with most immune problems, concentrated and simple carbs and sugars are not a good idea.  I personally do not juice fruits.  It's too tough on the blood sugar, and feeds fungus, parasites and bacteria in the gut and body.  Remember that when you juice, you are getting the sugar of many fruits, not just one.  I've found for myself that it's best to stick to veggies.

* Carrots and beets are sweet.  I put in at most, a half a carrot in my juice.  I want the nutrients and it does make the juice more tasty.  If I use any more, it causes problems because of the sugar.  I juice mostly green veggies like broccoli, kale, spinach, celery, etc.

* I started out with small quantities, like a couple of ounces.  Then I built up to the amount that worked for me.  I need to watch my carb and sugar intake, so I limit my juicing to around 6-8 ounces each time.  I try to juice 2 times a day.  My husband, who treats his diabetes with a low carb diet only gets maybe 2-3 ounces at a time.

* I feel best if I juice just before meal time or soon after.  It helps keep my blood sugar level.  I find if I juice as a snack by itself, I get a rush then a blood sugar drop shortly after.  If I juice before or after a meal, I feel a rush of energy without that drop.

* I always buy organic veggies for juicing.  My local supermarket gets organic veggies, or I go to the health food store.  I just can't see having that pesticide residue getting absorbed alone with the juice.  Organic is more expensive, and if I had unlimited funds, I would eat all organic.  At the very least, I juice organic.

* I used to make a big deal about having every variety of vegetable in my juice.  It became a huge task to clean, store and prepare the veggies.  Now I just choose maybe 4-5 veggie types, clean and prepare them for the week and refrigerate them ready to be juiced.
